Here are 5 key takeaways we had from our panelists:
1. Communication should be clear, consistent and predictable (i.e., recipients should be aware of when and what you’ll be communicating). Stay neutral about facts and compassionate about people.
2. Leverage technology tools that help you connect and engage support base. Offer value-added content that helps people where they’re even if it’s unrelated to your direct work. Give supporters tangible opportunities to step up during this season. Special technology recommendations were shared in the webinar.
3. For remote teams, stay connected online, communicate clearly and honestly, and articulate direction and vision. Create routines and rhythms for the team to develop a sense of cadence and purpose. Use metaphors to help your team visualize talking points and ideas.
4. Practice multi-scenario modeling. Create 3 models (worst/best/third) to work through multi-tier thinking in order to develop plans.
5. Don’t avoid financial planning. Work with your team and your lenders/banks to see what can be done or planned for during this season. Some institutions are making exceptions to their normal practice to help organizations during this difficult time. Take notes of even things you should have done but missed this time around (e.g., developing a line of credit) to make sure it never happens again.

Don’t forget to take care of yourself as you help others. A good leader needs to stay healthy and clear in thinking in order to effectively lead. You matter to everyone around you!
